We took Mao to get groomed. He wasn't ready on time and they gave us some story about how two cats got into a fight. But when we picked Mao up, we came up with a new theory. We figure they hurt him early on and were hoping that he would start walking normally if they gave him more time. No such luck. In fact, we went to doggy emergency last night. $250 later they think he's got a broken bone in his paw.

Blog blogging.
[This was originally at the bottom of Oscar's birthday post, but what was intended to be 2 lines turned into 2 pages, so I thought it best to move it elsewhere.]
Oh, and I was also thinking about writing the occasional comment fit for blogging, you know, things not entirely child-related. The thought for today has to do with Jian Ghomeshi. First off, let me be clear that I actually like him as a radio host. His program is the best thing in the afternoon timeslot since Roomers and Boarders. (or was it Rumours and Borders? And how can we ever know?)
Well, the Jian thought is this: Jian's radio program is the proof that there are two types of people in the world. Dwellers and non-dwellers. See, Jian had another life before he became a radio host. His other life was full of shameful deeds. Who, among us, does not have a past of awful, despicable (is there a spell check on this thing) acts? But unlike most of us, Jian does not try to mask or detach himself from his horrid doings. To use the current parlance, he "owns" them. See, back in the day, Jian was in a band (can they be called a band?) called Moxy Früvous. Yes, I got the umlaut right, because my keyboard can do that sort of thing. How shameful a thing is a Moxy Früvous? Let me try to put it in perspective. Can you remember where you were when you first learned that Häagen-Dazs was an entirely fictional word, created for marketing purposes? I chose that example only because it was also umlaut-related, but you get my point.
See, I'm personally embarassed so bring up the Jian issue because doing so implies a personal familiarity with the music, which is itself lamentable. In fact, in the interests of full disclosure, I even have to go so far as to admit that I actually dated a girl who actually liked the band. And I kept dating her even after I found out.
I was young.
But Jian. He is not troubled by such matters. In fact, he blabs about them on national (and potentially international) radio. He says things like "When my band played at Massey Hall..." I can tell you that my opinion of him whipsawed when I heard him say that. Because prior to that phrase, I hadn't associated him with the band at all. I just thought he was another mildly pompous CBC host. But then he mentioned his "band" and I thought, hmm, maybe this guy isn't quite as full of it as he seems to be. So I googled it, only to discover that the "band" he was refering to was Moxy Früvous.
But of course, my disgust at him has been tempered by a sort of awe. I believe that we all love to have friends who publicly humiliate themselves. It helps us to take the edge off our own shame be that public or private. I, personally, have many private shames. Occasionally, I have shared them with others, though never through a forum as vast as Jian's. I will share one with you now.
Once, while I was walking my dog, he pooed on the sidewalk. As is my habit, I stooped and picked up the poo with a bag I was carrying for just that purpose. A little further down the sidewalk, Mao decided to have another little dump, this time right in front of one of my friendly neighbours' houses. The neighbour asked if I needed a bag. "No no", I said, waving my bag, already poo-filled, "I have one here."
Why did I feel the need to wave my poo-bag around? I can tell you that I have spent many, many hours with just that question festering in my mind. And I still don't have an answer. The only defence I can come up with is that the exchange was in French. Perhaps I felt I needed a prop.
Jian. My Jian. Continue to regale us with your stories of personal failure. I'm sure that, if I don't turn the station like I do when America's funniest home videos or one of its clones comes one, I will find both us just a tad more human. Or maybe I will think that one of us is some sort of freak. Yeah, probably the latter.

Oscar's first birthday!
Yup, it's true. My posting has been reduced to near zero. Already I'm struggling to work normal hours, what with the multiple NDRIs (New Daycare-Related Illnesses) the kids have brought home and generously shared with us. Plus we just sealed the deal on our house, which is currently under construction, cold room and all. So mea culpa, mea culpa, but get over it.
Anyway, I couldn't let Oscar's birthday go by without sharing it with the wide wide world. Those of you who still check this blog, that is.
